Most Recent Meeting Minutes July 10, 2010 Milwaukee Art Museum
Wrapping up WQSG July, 10, 2010 tour at Milwaukee Art Museum: 24 quilt enthusiasts turned out to see the Winterthur Quilts on display at MAM on July 10, 201l. We had folks from Wisconsin, Illinois and one brave soul from Iowa! (Good for you, Catherine Litwinow!) We had two docents so we viewed the quilts in two groups. After the tour the majority of us assembled in the Museum’s café for lunch. After lunch folks were able to revisit the Winterthur exhibit or view exhibits at MAM------or visit Milwaukee’s other attractions. I felt there were some problems with the docent’s presentation and I was disappointed-----anyone else share that opinion? I had difficulty hearing because of the noise in the gallery and also because our docent read her notes thus didn’t project her voice to us. Second, I think the information provided had more to do with the history of the period or maker rather than a focus on the quilts. However, it dawned on me what a difficult group we are to give a tour to about quilts------because everyone is so knowledgeable about quilt history, quilts, fabric dating and on and on!!!!! (We have to take our expertise into consideration if we ever have another guided tour!) The MAM had our tickets, along with a 10% discount card at the gift shop, ready when we arrived. (I hope many of you purchased the book and saved $4.00.) The money went like this: 24 folks @ $12.00 = $288.00. MAM admission and tour leaders =$257.00. Gratuity=$30.00. (Balance=$1.00. My cost of providing handouts on Linda Eaton’s lecture.) Now some of you may think the gratuity was too much. Keep in mind that we are also building a relationship with WQSG and MAM. We also need to keep in mind MAM did a good job in setting up the tour and providing us with two tour guides per my request. It is not their fault that they are not as knowing, about quilts, as WE are. It has been a good learning if we ever decide to have a conducted tour at a future date. Thanks for turning out for the tour and I hope all of you enjoyed seeing the Winterthur Quilts and hopefully you will be able to return to view them again before they leave-----they will be "like old friends" when you see them again! Have a wonderful summer! Sandy Schweitzer
