The Wisconsin Quilt Study Group met on November 14, 2009 at Attic Angels Place in Madison, Wisconsin.  Sherry Branson presented information about indigo and shared research and handouts from several sources.  Kay Walters brought along a sample of indigo pigment cakes that she uses for painting and dyeing.  Kay uses alum or cream of tartar mordants.

A few business items: 

Future meeting places, topics, coordinators were revisited and have now been posted on the website under upcoming meetings.

We discussed whether or not to have a meeting fee and decided to contribute as needed for web site fees, coffee etc. and/or for admission charges to a facility.

#1 Lauri Magee, NE Kentucky Antique Shop Hand Quilted Pontiac Star variation C1875 Indigo Sashing with cheddar Posts, Different colors of thread used in the quilting.

#2 Carol Butzke, 2 pics, 9 patch variation from dealer in MN, Lots of novelty fabrics in lights & Indigos C1880 9 patch blocks vary in size & are made to fit.

#3 Sylvia Adair, Purchased in Fox River Antiques C1900, different indigos natural & synthetic dyes that has faded. Pattern locks alternate with indigo print blocks.

#4 Carol Butzke, 2 pics, Stars, C 1915 9 star blocks on indigo, with wine sashing, Origin unknown.

#5 Carol Butzke, 2 pics Pillar print border indigo or prussian, C1825-35 Varied quilting designs in white, double line in patterned block, Backing is sewn in the middle with selvages

#6 Sylvia Adair, 2 pics Aquired at rummage sale in Cedarburg, Windmill pattern alternating in Green. Great sample of Brown madder.

#7 Kit Schmidt, Shoo Fly Kekoskee Wi, from estate sale of Verna Zergiebel, Tied, thick batting C1910

#8 Kit Schmidt, 2 pics, log cabin with unusual diagonally cut squares along the right side of the quilt, same estate sale tied with red yarn C1910

#9 Kit Schmidt  9 patch from 4 patches, some repairs (pink) upper right, Faded, Anna Eckberg Larson, Big Springs in Adams County

#10 Kay Walters from dealer in Ohio, Strippy, some fading, edging replaced

#11 Kay Walters, Blue & white, hand quilted orange peel, robbing peter to pay paul C1890

#12 Kay Walters, 16 blocks with Cadet blue sashing & red posts, C1900 top finished with a lavender backing. 9 patch w/rail fence & 1/2 square triangle

#13 Debbie, 2 pics, baskets Grandmother Alma Galligher gave it to her, Southern Indiana, Garden maze Signed Debbie 1967, Quilt is older than Grandmother.

#14 Cathie,  Signature quilt, origin unknown Ebay purchase, Embroidered Names in same color as block, blocks are older than the sashing from 40's

#15 Cathie, From a friend, Shoo fly Cadet sashing, lots of mourning prints, was tied at some point C1910

#16 Cathie, 2 pics, one back & one front, 4 fans, wheel blocks in wools & embroidered along the edges, thee other side is Broken dishes, deep scrap bag.

#18 Donna, Antique Shop near Rhinelander, 9 patch w mourning cloth sashing, scrap, red robe print, some decorator fabrics

#19 Donna, 2 pics, Antique Mall in Fond du Lac, 9 Patch hand quilted, wonderful madders, some teal C1875 Pieced pillar print on back

#20 Jayne, maker  & origin unknown, Anvil variation, note faded blues which indicate use of synthetic dyes for some blocks.  c 1900

#21 Jayne, blanket from Guizhow Province in China, c 1920, appliqué with couched cord.

#22 Jayne, 1825 signed medallion, possible English origin, batting is light & dark wool, pillar prints on borders

#23 Sherry Branson, 25 blocks, C 1885 Red white & Blue, red borders, hand pieced very bright.
