September 16-18, 2011 (Friday-Sunday) Cedar Valley Retreat Center 5349 County Rd. D, West Bend, WI
Cedar Valley Retreat Center Merikay Waldvogel, a nationally known quilt authority, is an author, curator, and lecturer focusing on quilts and women's lives. Raised in the Midwest, she first taught English in Chicago and then moved to Knoxville in 1977. Her interest in quilts led her to ask Southern women to tell their stories, and a writing career began. In 1986, she wrote Quilts of Tennessee: Images of Domestic Life Prior to 1930 with Bets Ramsey, based on their statewide quilt search. Merikay's other books are: Soft Covers for Hard Times: Quiltmaking and the Great Depression; Patchwork Souvenirs of the 1933 Chicago World's Fair; and Southern Quilts: Surviving Relics of the Civil War. She is a past Board member of the American Quilt Study Group and the Knoxville Writers' Guild. Sylvia Adair is a member of WQSG as well as an active member of the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts. She has a love of antique quilts and their preservation. One of her passions is to piece together older blocks on her treadle machine or featherweight. She is also the data input trainer for The Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts for the international Quilt Index project, recording of Wisconsin quilts on an internet available database. Sylvia will start off our retreat Friday after dinner, with a progress report from the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts in Cedarburg. She’ll discuss their efforts documenting quilts in Wisconsin and the publication Wisconsin Quilts: History in the Stitches. She’ll share information on how the Museum got involved in the Quilt Index Project and give an overview of the process. On Sunday, Sylvia will share some of the spectacular quilts in the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts. Saturday, Merikay will take the morning and discuss 19th century quilts, fabrics, styles, etc... and the afternoon will be spent discussing 20th century quilts, fabrics and colors, patterns and kits. On Sunday morning, Merikay will present a lecture on the 1933 Sears Quilt Contest. Retreat fees include single or double occupancy guest rooms with private baths, 6 meals and workshop costs. Space is limited. A $75 non-refundable deposit is required to reserve a place for you. If you wish to share a room, but don’t have a roommate, we can help find one for you. Sign up soon to reserve your place. The balance of your fee is due by Monday, August 1, 2011 as we need to get back to the facility with final numbers.
